Breaking Centuries - Old Divides
In the heart of Jhadol, Rajasthan, two areas-Upli Birothi and Nichli Birothi-stood divided for centuries. Festivals were celebrated separately, and people rarely sat together. But in 1982, something remarkable happened. Under the guidance of Seva Mandir, a mat was spread in a public space, and for the first time, people from both areas sat together, discussing the future of their village. It was a turning point, and at the center of it all was Kesar Singh Solanki, an unlikely leader who believed in unity and progress.
From Struggles to Strength
Born in 1951 in Nichli Birothi, Kesar Singh's journey was anything but easy. Due to financial constraints, he could not study beyond the 5th standard. Despite his struggles, he never lost hope. While working as a farmer and laborer to support his family, he remained determined to bring change to his community. His leadership journey began in 1982 when he became an adult education instructor with Seva Mandir. Many of his students went on to become teachers and jailors, proving the power of education in transforming lives.
Leading the Charge for Development
In 1989, Kesar Singh became the chairman of the Gram Vikas Committee. One of his major contributions was leading a large-scale water harvesting project in Birothi village, impacting over 400 hectares of land. This project provided employment to many villagers and ensured long-term water security. Despite challenges, including land encroachments, he stood firm, mobilizing the community to reclaim their resources. His efforts led to fencing, drainage systems, and sustainable grass cultivation, benefiting the village for generations.
Fighting for the Village's Rights
Between 2003 and 2010, Kesar Singh played a key role in initiating three water regeneration projects. When road construction threatened vital underground pipelines, he led a successful protest, securing compensation for the village. His advocacy ensured that the villagers' hard work in water conservation was protected.
A Legacy of Service and Recognition
Beyond infrastructure and environmental work, Kesar Singh also focused on education, securing computers for village schools. His leadership extended to public health, helping his community navigate the COVID-19 pandemic through awareness campaigns, vaccination drives, and essential healthcare support. His selfless service earned him the Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award in 2022, recognizing his relentless efforts toward sustainable development.
A True Grassroots Leader
Kesar Singh Solanki's story is a testament to how one determined individual can transform a community. From breaking social barriers to fighting for environmental justice, he has shown that leadership isn't about power-it's about bringing people together for a better future. His journey is an inspiration for all who believe in the power of unity and grassroots change.
