An Inspiring Tale of Unity, Determination, and Forest Protection
Nestled amidst the forested slopes of the Aravali range, Khakharkheda village is a shining example of how collective effort drives change. The journey of this small tribal village is a story of resilience, unity, and unwavering commitment to protecting their forest.
A Community United for the Forest
Khakharkheda's journey began in 1982 through an adult education program with Seva Mandir. Surrounded by 75 hectares of forest, the village faced illegal woodcutting from neighbors. Determined to act, the villagers formed a committee, sharing the duty of forest protection. Their collective vigilance soon halted the logging.
Overcoming Challenges Together
Seeking support, they approached the Forest Department, which built protective walls and planted trees. In 2018, they established the Community Forest Rights and Management Committee, taking charge of conservation efforts. Despite challenges, including illegal felling, Khakharkheda stood firm, protecting their forest and their rights.
Turning Forest Wealth into Livelihood
Securing Community Forest Rights in 2018 allowed them to manage and benefit from forest resources. Bamboo harvests provided vital income, while mahua flowers, ratanjot, and dolma became key sources of livelihood. Agriculture and animal husbandry, supported by forest resources, sustained the community.
A Voice for Justice and Conservation
When authorities proposed settling displaced villagers on their forest land, Khakharkheda resisted, submitting a memorandum to halt the proposal and successfully protecting their rights.
Inspiring Others and Building a Better Future
Beyond conservation, the villagers, with support from Seva Mandir and Van Utthan Sansthan, built water tanks, carried out soil conservation, and opened a Balwadi center for children. Their success has inspired neighboring villages to adopt similar initiatives.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
In honor of their extraordinary commitment, the Community Forest Rights and Management Committee of Khakharkheda receives the Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award 2025, including a ₹25,000 cash prize and a citation.
Their journey proves that with unity and determination, even the smallest villages can make a lasting impact on the environment and society.
