A Life Rooted in Resilience
Shri Ramkishan Purohit, a 66-year-old resident of Dhanwal village in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district, is living proof that age is just a number when it comes to making a difference. Born into a family with limited means, he had to leave his education after the 10th standard and migrate to Gujarat for work. For 35 years, he toiled away, supporting his family, but his heart remained in Dhanwal. When he returned in 2016 after retirement, he was determined to give back to the village that shaped him.
Turning Water Woes into Abundance
Water scarcity had long been a struggle for the people of Dhanwal. Farming was difficult, and drinking water was scarce. In 2021, when Seva Mandir initiated agricultural development work, Shri Ramkishan saw an opportunity to help. With his leadership, the villagers, along with Seva Mandir, repaired a 30-year-old water dam. The results were almost immediate-after the first monsoon, the dam was full, wells had more water, and farmers finally had reliable irrigation.
A Warrior Against Encroachment
Land meant for the community must stay with the community - this was Shri Ramkishan's belief when he saw a 40-hectare pasture being illegally occupied. Despite facing resistance, he didn't back down. He took the matter to the Panchayat, then to the Jaipur administration, and even fought a legal battle for a year. His perseverance paid off. With the support of local authorities, the encroachment was removed, and the land was restored. Today, that very pasture has a thriving fruit garden, solar-powered water sources, and even attracts visitors!
Challenging Social Evils, One Step at a Time
Shri Ramkishan's impact extends beyond land and water. He has been a vocal advocate against child marriage and dowry. Leading by example, he refused dowry for his son's marriage, sending a strong message to the community. His leadership also led to the end of an age-old practice of distributing large quantities of sweets at funerals, reducing unnecessary financial burdens on grieving families.
A Beacon of Hope and Change
Whether it was helping vaccinate livestock during the Lumpy virus outbreak or ensuring food and water for people during the pandemic, Shri Ramkishan has always stepped up when his village needed him. His tireless efforts even led to the upgradation of the village school, giving children a brighter future.
At 66, Shri Ramkishan Purohit is not slowing down-he is just getting started. His story is a testament to the power of persistence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to one's roots also honored by Umed Mal Lodha Environmental Award in the year 2024. He proves that one person, armed with determination, can transform an entire community.
