From Struggle to Strength: Santosh Kunwar Bhati’s Journey as a Guardian of the Forest

Early Life and Challenges
Born and raised in Udaipur, Santosh Kunwar Bhati was married at the young age of 14. Like many young brides in traditional households, she had to abandon her studies and conform to societal expectations. However, life took a cruel turn as she endured years of domestic abuse and was taunted for having daughters.

Determined to escape the cycle of suffering, she made a bold decision-walking away from her painful past with her three young daughters in search of a better future.

A New Beginning with Seva Mandir
With nowhere to go, Santosh faced rejection even from her own parents. However, her grandmother stood by her side, offering her much-needed support. Through this encouragement, she found a job as a cleaner at Seva Mandir, an organization working at the grassroots level.

It was here that she regained her confidence and was motivated to restart her education. Despite juggling multiple responsibilities, she studied tirelessly-passing her eighth-grade exams, then her tenth, twelfth, and eventually completing her graduation.

Becoming a Forest Guard
In 2016, a life-changing opportunity presented itself-a job posting for a forest guard at Amberi Naka. Without hesitation, Santosh applied and was selected. Today, as she proudly wears the uniform of a forest guard, she stands as a symbol of resilience and strength.

A Fierce Protector of the Environment
Santosh's role as a forest guard is more than just a job; it is a mission. She has actively fought forest fires, driven out sandalwood thieves, and educated local communities about sustainable forest practices.

One of her most remarkable acts of bravery was during a massive fire in Dhikli village. Her quick thinking and leadership helped mobilize the Forest Protection and Management Committee, preventing the fire from causing further destruction and saving countless wildlife and trees.

Empowering Young Girls Through Education
Santosh's personal struggles have fueled her passion for advocating against early marriages. She works to educate young girls, encouraging them to continue their studies just as she did. For her, the forest is not just a workplace-it is a legacy to be protected for future generations.

Recognition and Legacy
In recognition of her dedication and courage, Santosh received the prestigious Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award 2023. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she credits Seva Mandir for her transformation.

Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and resilience. Santosh Kunwar Bhati's story is not just about survival-it is about thriving against all odds and inspiring others to do the same.
