A Modest Beginning with a Big Dream
In the small tehsil of Delwara in Rajsamand district, lives a man whose love for nature knows no bounds. Chen Singh Jhala, a 50-year-old with a disability in one leg, has turned his challenges into opportunities. Living with his 100-year-old mother, whom he lovingly cares for, Chen Singh has dedicated his life to a cause bigger than himself - nurturing the environment.
Inspired by a Simple Lesson
Chen Singh's journey began during his school days when a teacher taught him the importance of planting trees. Although financial hardships forced him to leave school after the 8th grade, that one lesson stayed with him forever. In 2004, he joined the Nagrik Manch in Delwara, and his association with Seva Mandir further fueled his passion for social service.
From Saplings to Shade: A Legacy Grows
Six years ago, Chen Singh planted trees around the Palera Lake in Delwara, which now stand tall, offering shade and beauty. A Peepal tree he planted at the bus stand has grown into a large, leafy canopy under which people wait for buses. But that's just a glimpse of his work. Chen Singh has planted around 3000 saplings, including mango, neem, banyan, pomegranate, and tulsi, across various public places like temples, schools, and pastures.
A Labor of Love and Perseverance
What makes Chen Singh's work extraordinary is his sheer determination. Despite his physical disability, he brings water from 1.5 kilometers away to nurture the plants. He invests his own money to buy saplings and tends to them with utmost care. His unwavering commitment has not gone unnoticed - the villagers now admire and support his efforts.
An Unstoppable Spirit
Chen Singh's story is one of grit, selflessness, and boundless love for nature. He often says, "As long as my body supports me, I will continue planting and protecting trees." His dedication serves as an inspiration for many, showing that true leadership comes not from power or position, but from a genuine desire to make a difference.
Honoring Environmental Excellence
Shri Chen Singh Jhala's dedication and tireless efforts toward environmental conservation truly embody the spirit of the Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award.
His recognition with the 2024 award, accompanied by a Certificate of Appreciation and a cash prize, stands as a testament to his impactful contributions. Through his inspiring journey, we are reminded that individual actions can drive meaningful change, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
