A Humble Beginning with a Bold Vision
In Dayali village, Sarada tehsil, Salumber district, 57-year-old Champalal Meena has redefined grassroots leadership. With education only up to class 10, he proves that true leadership requires heart, not titles. His work with the Mandli Watershed Development Committee sparked initiatives in watershed management, tree plantation, women's empowerment, and livelihood development.
Empowering Women, Building Futures
In 2012, with support from Gayatri Seva Sansthan, Champalal went door-to-door, encouraging women to form self-help groups (SHGs). His efforts helped them access bank loans, launch home-based businesses, and gain financial independence. He also ensured that every child, boy or girl, went to school, planting seeds for a brighter future.
Overcoming Doubts, Inspiring Trust
The path wasn't easy. Villagers initially feared losing their land to development projects. But with cultural programs and success story screenings, Champalal, alongside Gayatri Seva Sansthan, gradually won their trust and united the community.
Reviving Livelihoods, Restoring Nature
Facing dwindling livelihoods and rising migration, Champalal led a large-scale water harvesting initiative, building ponds and anicuts to store rainwater. This improved irrigation and enabled year-round vegetable cultivation, boosting farmers' incomes. Alongside, he spearheaded tree plantation drives, spreading environmental awareness. Today, 937 hectares of forest thrive, benefiting the ecosystem and the economy.
A Legacy of Change and Recognition
Through tireless efforts, Champalal Meena has transformed his village and inspired others. His journey is proof that one person's vision can create ripples of hope. In recognition, he is awarded the Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award 2025, with a cash prize and a Certificate of Appreciation.
Champalal Meena's story reminds us: Perseverance and passion can turn dreams into reality.
