In the heart of Bhilwara district, a remarkable woman is quietly changing the landscape-both literally and figuratively. Vandana Sharma, a dedicated forest guard, has become a beacon of hope for environmental conservation, proving that one person can spark a significant change, even in the most unlikely places.
From Childhood Curiosity to Lifelong Commitment
Vandana's journey into environmental activism began long before her career in the forest department. Growing up in Bapu Nagar, she was inspired by her parents to respect and protect nature. From a young age, she would collect seeds from fruits, plant them around her home, and tend to the saplings as they grew. It was this childhood curiosity that laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to nature.
A Forest Guard with a Mission
For the past twelve years, Vandana has been working as a forest guard, but her role goes far beyond just maintaining the forest. She is a tireless advocate for sustainability, with a particular focus on reusing discarded seeds. Vandana's efforts to collect seeds and grow plants have contributed significantly to reforesting areas around Bhilwara, Vijaynagar, and Kota. Her initiative has resulted in the planting of over one lakh fruit-bearing and shady trees, turning barren spaces into vibrant, green areas.
Overcoming Challenges with Innovation
Vandana's work hasn't been without challenges. Collecting seeds often meant dealing with rotting seeds, which developed fungus and emitted foul smells. But instead of being deterred, Vandana used this challenge as an opportunity to innovate. She encouraged people to dry and clean the seeds before collecting them, ensuring that the seeds could be successfully planted. Her perseverance has inspired many in her community, with people coming together to help collect seeds and plant trees, further expanding her mission.
Leading a Green Revolution with Seed Balls
Vandana's creative approach to tree planting has taken her mission even further. By introducing the concept of seed balls-small balls made of seeds and soil that can be thrown onto barren land-she has found a way to grow trees in even the most difficult terrains. Thanks to her leadership, around 20,000 seed balls are created annually, and each year, Vandana plants about 2,000 new trees. Her goal? To cover the entire Bhilwara district with lush greenery.
A Champion for Wildlife Rescue
Vandana's contributions don't stop with trees. She is also an active participant in wildlife rescue operations, having successfully rescued and rehabilitated over 45 animals, including Nilgai, peacocks, pythons, jackals, and monkeys. Her compassion for all living creatures has earned her respect as a true champion of nature.
A True Environmental Hero
Vandana Sharma's relentless dedication and innovative approach have made her a leader in the true sense. Her work is a powerful reminder that anyone, regardless of their background or resources, can make a lasting impact on the world. For her extraordinary contributions to environmental conservation, Vandana was honored with the prestigious Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award in 2025, a well-deserved recognition of her unwavering commitment to protecting our planet.
Vandana's story is a testament to the power of grassroots leadership. Through her determination, creativity, and passion for nature, she has sparked a green revolution that continues to inspire communities far and wide.
