A Village That Never Gives Up
Nestled in the Aravali mountain range, Owara village in Jhadol block stands as a symbol of resilience and collective spirit. Home to 300 tribal families, this community turned their dream of reclaiming pasture land into reality - a story defined by courage, determination, and unity.
A Bold Step Towards Conservation
In 2023, the Owara Village Development Committee set out to conserve 24.13 hectares of pastureland. Faced with 7 permanent and 12 visual encroachments, the villagers chose peaceful dialogue, successfully resolving the issue with 12 encroachers. But their biggest challenge was yet to come.
Overcoming Struggles Through Unity
When the remaining encroachers retaliated by filing a police case, leading to the arrest of the committee's president and secretary, the villagers rallied together. Their collective strength secured their leaders' release and pressed their fight for justice.
When encroachers demolished the boundary fort, the villagers sought legal support. The Tehsildar and Patwari verified the land records and officially marked the pasture boundaries - a victory for Owara.
Compassion in Conflict
In an extraordinary act of empathy, the committee discovered that one of the encroachers had an unfinished house. Instead of fostering hostility, the villagers raised Rs. 25,520 through community donations and completed the house - a powerful gesture that resolved conflict and exemplified Owara's compassion.
A Green Dream Takes Root
With support from Seva Mandir, the village planted 13,000 trees, creating a thriving green space. They also introduced a community fund, charging Rs. 100 per person for grass harvesting. In their first year, they collected 32,000 bundles of grass, while two families took turns guarding the land daily.
A Legacy of Hope and Inspiration
Owara's journey of unity, courage, and compassion earned them the 2025 Umed Mal Lodha Environment Award. Their story stands as a beacon of hope - proof that grassroots leadership and collective action can transform communities and protect the environment for generations to come.
